Yo Yo is the new film by Iranian director Mohammadreza Mayghani, author of Orthodontics, a short film selected for competition at Cannes in 2021 and Sundance in 2022.

Dans un désert reculé du sud de l’Iran, un jeune homme est hanté par des voix que lui seul perçoit. Son esprit vacille, traversé par une souffrance muette. À ses côtés, une jeune femme énigmatique tente de le délivrer.

In the desert of southern Iran, a young man hears voices that haunt him. His friend Shadi is determined to free him from the madness that imprisons him.

_ MOHAMMADREZA MAYGHANI

« From the very beginning, I’ve tried to go against the dominant current of Iranian cinema in my films. What is typically known in Iran as “social” or “political” films hasn’t really appealed to me — neither visually nor conceptually. The only Iranian film that inspired me during the making of Yo Yo was Taste of Cherry by Kiarostami — a film about a man who wants to take his own life. But I’ve always tried to merge my ideas with a modern visual language, to offer a fresh and different experience to the audience.

Also, connecting with the younger generation is very important to me — a generation that travels, goes camping, swims in Iranian beaches, and lives in a different way, outside the official frameworks. »

« Filmmakers like Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jacques Tati, ÉricRohmer, Antonioni, and Bergman have been sources of inspiration for me. Tati’s unique visual style has always fascinated me, and I’ve often wondered whether it’s possible to blend his humorous world and style with the internal and heavy atmosphere of Bergman or Fassbinder’s cinema. In Yo Yo, I tried to continue that path: while giving importance to the visual form, I also prioritized a complex and human narrative.

The location we chose is one of the most unusual and untouched natural areas in Iran, far from Tehran. From the beginning, it was important to me that the characters go somewhere completely separate from the urban space — a place where no modern element is visible. The nature, the simplicity, and the rawness of the setting had to impose themselves on the image. I think this complete detachment from the city helped the story become more believable. »
